Clinical Myotherapy
Clinical Myotherapy is a branch of manual medecine which focuses on the treatment and
management of musculosketal pain.
This involves an extensive physical evaluation and an integrated therapeutic approach
to affected muscles, joints and nerves and is used in the treatment of acute or
chronic conditions and in the area of preventive management.
Most musculo-skeletal pain stems from, or involves: a) myofacial pain originating from
trauma or muscle contracture, b) neuropathis pain originating from the central or
peripheral nervous system, and c) articular pain originating from joint pathologies.
This pain may be the result of an injury with an obvious reason for its existence, or
it may have a gradual onset with no obvious reason for its development. Clinical
Myotherapy will normally provide relief if not the elimination of that pain.
In some instances the use of Clinical Myotherapy is directed to the alleviation of symptoms
of conditions such as narrowing of disc spaces, arthritis, or other conditions involving
chronic pain. In these instances, treatment is directed to improving quality of life,
rather than resolving the underlying condition.
Clinical Myotherapists complete a four-year Bachelor of Health Science in Clinical
Myotherapy. They may practice independantly, or in conjunction with treatment provided
by other health care-practitioners.

Clinical Myotherapy Questions
Q1. Do I require a referal from my GP to see a Clinical Myotherapist?
A1.
Clinical Myotherapy is a primary health care practice, a refereal is not required.
However, during our consultation we normally reccomend that your GP is informed you
are seeing a Clinical Myotherapist.
Q2. How long are Clinical Myotherapy treatments?
A2. A treatment will normally last for approximatly 30 minutes with the initial consultation
taking a little longer. Appointments are scheduled 45 minutes apart.
Q3. How many treatments are normally required?
A3. Treatment is efficient and cost effective without the need for ongoing treatment.
Most musculo-skeletal conditions can be resolved in 3-6 treatments and there should
be noticeable improvement after only a couple of sessions.
Depending on the nature of the condition, maintainence treatments may also prove
useful and these may vary from from once every six weeks to once every six months or more.
Q4. What does a treatment usually involve?
A4. Assessment will include checking for the ease and fluidity of movement
at joings and palpating the muscles and joints for any indication of
irregularities such as muscle contracture, inflammation or joing restriction.
The treatment modalities to be used will depend on the presenting condition nd
this will be discussed with you prior to treatment.
At the initial consultation, A breif medical history is recorded along with related matters such as lifestyle,
activities and past injuries etc. Feedback throughout the course of treatment is encouraged
and it is important that you feel completly comfortable during each treatment.
